I don't see it as a clear cut division between being motivated by a desire to increase national wealth and power and a purely religious one!. I think both were powerful influences, that were closely inter-woven!.
Let's remember the Reformation and Counter- Reformation in Europe saw the Thirty Years War, the French Wars of Religion and English Civil War all of which had a major religious component!.Religion was something Europeans would fight to the death over - which they did by the tens of thousands!.Not always easy to relate to from a modern perspective!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The 'rivalry' was whipped up to get the public behind a military pursuits that were probably financially motivated!. Elizabeth I, for example, was keen to get the public hating the Spanish!. The celebrated sailors of her age - like Francis Drake - were forever trying to capture Spanish gold shipments - they were basically money hungry pirates - and the crown certainly got a share!.
