Hon, the Mayans were NOT a "tribe"!.

The Mayans were an EMPIRE!.!.!.!.!.one that included Mayans and MANY other 'adoptees" from tribes all over the area!.

They started up around 250 AD!.

There were actually MANY DIFFERENT Mayan languages too!.
There were Chiapas, Tabasco, Quintana Roo, Campeche and Yucatán!. also the Itza Maya, Ko'woj, and Yalain groups!.!.!.!. and more!.

Other Mesoamerican cultures in the area that were NOT Mayans included the Teotihuacan and the Zapotec and the non-Mesoamerican groups, like the Tainos!.

Think of it this way!.!.!.!.!.the Mayan Empire being like the British Empire!.

The British Empire/United Kingdom has Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland!.

And they have connections and business alliances with non-British Empire countries of the Republic of Ireland and the United States!.

I hope that helps make more sense!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The first Settlements in the Maya area popped up about 1800B!.C!. They continued to grow and then entered their 'Classic Period' in 250A!.D!. This is when they really flourished and became the civilization that we always hear about!. Through the 8th and 9th centuries, the Mayan civilization began suffering its collapse!. By 1697, the last of the Mayan states were overtaken by the Spanish!. So they had a very long history, which spanned through the existence of many other tribes and empires!.
