All of the victorious powers in Europe (England, Soviet Union and the USA) had different ideas of how the post-war map of Europe should be made up!. Specifically, the Soviet Union had been devastated by the German invasion and felt they deserved to have a buffer between themselves and any reconstituted Germany!. For this reason, the USSR would not remove its armies from Eastern Europe and instituted Communist revolutions to set up puppet states in them!. The USSR also staged attempts at revolutions in Western Europe but without success!. The USA and Britain both wanted a free Europe that would also be rebuilt as a fence to keep the Soviet Union within what they felt its borders should be!.

In addition, both camps disagreed about the future set-up of Germany!. The USSR, which had suffered terribly, felt that Germany should be forced to pay for the war, and should be rebuilt in a way that it would be too weak in the future to pose another threat to peace!. The West believed that Germany, after political cleansing, should be rebuilt as part of a united Europe that could be built into a trading partner!.

As a result of these differences, both sides believed that the other was acting in bad faith and would pose a threat in the near future!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
