I began to wonder some things of the Titanic!. How long did it actually take for the Titanic to sink!? Did more people die and drown or were rescued by lifeboats!? Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The Titanic hit the iceberg at 1140 pm ship's time!. It sank at 220am ship's time, thus it took 2 hours and 40 minutes to sink!. Approximately 1500 people died when it sank, while only about 714 people survived!. Had all the boats been properly launched at full capacity, another 400 people might have been saved!. After hitting the iceberg and coming to a stop, besides the Captain and officers, Thomas Andrews was called to evaluate the damage!. He worked for the company building the ship, and indeed, Titanic was in a sense his baby, he having supervised its construction from keel to crows nest!. With his engineering background, Andrews would have been the first to recognise the ship was doomed!. Reports are he gave the ship between an hour, and an hour and a half to live!. Despite this, it was almost 30 minutes before the first calls for help left the ship, and an hour before the first lifeboats were launched!. The first few boats left less than half filled, as passengers didn't realize the danger!. The huge ship seemed safer than a small boat hanging high over the water!. This changed as time went on, and the ship began going down by the head!. There are many tales of heroism and tragedy to be told about the people on the Titanic!. Of the people who did not survive, consider this list!. All of the engineers went down with the ship, which did not lose lighting until minutes before the end!. They also kept the ship's pump running, which bought precious time for launching the boats!. All the clergymen aboad died!. As did all of the band, which did "play on" until they literally could not do so!. Unfortunately, none of the ship's boys, who ran the elevators and did other jobs aboard, survived!. Several newlywed couples elected to stay together, as did Isadore and Ida Strauss, an elderly couple who were co-owners of Macy's!. A number of first class passengers also died, including John Jacob Astor, one of the richest men in the world, and Major Archibald Butts, a confidente of the president of the United States!. There were two wireless operators who kept sending SOS messages until they ran out of power!. The senior man would die, and it was luck that the junior man, Harold Bride, survived to give an account of the wireless traffic that night Its hard to say how I'd have reacted!. I'd like to think I'd have done what I could to help people to the boats, or otherwise remain calm!. I suppose if I knew right away the ship was going to sink, I'd do what I can then make sure I got off of the ship on a boat, or somehow arranged for a proper floating platform to survive on!. it would have been an amazing experience to have sailed on the Titanic, though by modern standards it was hopelessly cramped and lacking in modern convienances!.Www@QuestionHome@Com As it departed on its maiden voyage in April 1912 th TITANIC was proclaimed to be the greatest engineering acheivement ever!.It is having a length of two and a half football fields,it was also the most glamorous of ocean liners,complete with a tropical vinegarden restaurant and a fast sea going masseuse n supposed to be the first fully safe ship n was confidently believed to be virtually unsinkable!. Boyed by such confidence, teh captain allowed the ship to sail full speed at night in an area frequented by icebergs,one of which tore a large gap in the ship's side flooding 5 compartments,but there were no enough life boats!.Accordingly only 825 places were required in life boats,sufficient for a mere one-quarter of the titanic's capacity of 3547 passengers and crew!. The result: 1522dead out of 2227 on board for the titanic's first trip!. There are conjectures that the Titanic left England with a coal fire on board , that this made the captain rush the ship to New York, and the water entering the coal bunkers through the gash caused an explosion and greater damage to the compartments!.The embrittlement of the ship's steel hull in the icy waters caused a much larger crack than than a collision would otherwise have produced!.
