Question: Regency etiquette-carriage seating
Let's say a gentleman, his sister and the sister's female guest were going to a ball!. They are in a carrige!. I know it is improper for a female other than the gentleman's siste, wife or mother to be seated next to him!. But what scenerios can there be so that the sister ends up sitting across and the unrelated woman next to the man!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

That wouldn't happen!.

The lower in rank would always take the forward seat, which is the one going backwards (back to the horses)!.

If there are a gentleman, his sister and her guest, I assume they would all be of equal rank, and the gentleman would, courteously, take the forward seat!. I can't think of a scenario you describe that would allow the gentleman's sister sitting alone opposite her brother together with her guest!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
