Who lead the Continental Army!? Much of what Adams did was on the political side, but politics would have been useless without someone leading the military effort!. In fact it was only after the Continental Army won a few battles that Franklin (you forgot how much Franklin did for the country towards independence, as much as Adams) and Adams were finally able to convince European nations, especially France, that the colonies could stand up to what was considered one of the best armies in the world at the time and win!. The British army!. And Washington was the man who lead the Continental Army!. More people credit his efforts, in fighting the British, seeing that the army became a true army rather than a group of local militias, and actually keeping the army together during the darkest period of the war, with actually doing more to secure independence than Adams!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Adams was fairly important, as was Franklin, by the way, among others, but he was a member of Congress, and thus didn't stand out so starkly, and there were also a lot of Americans who looked upon Congress with a degree of distaste!. Washington, on the other hand, had led the Continental Army throughout the war, and in keeping it intact and in the field, had managed to become the most singly recognizable leader of the new nation!. He was so very popular that at the time it was often said that he could have chosen to become the first American king, if he'd wanted to!. Fortunately, he was as dedicated to republican principals and as humble and self-effacing as ever!. Washington seemed like (and almost certainly was) the one man who could fill the new post of President in such a way that there would be no sectional conflict (he was a Virginian, but had proven himself to the New Englanders, as an example)!. Adams, as good as he was, was identifiable as a New England Yankee, and the Southern colonies might well have found him unpalitable in those first two terms!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It almost sounds as if this question could have come from John Adams, he had the same response, I gather!.

Washington was a focal point, he was the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, which in the early days was practically the only thing national we had!. In the convention that wrote the Constitution, the Presiding officer was George Washington!. He sat there throughout the deliberations, and it just naturally seemed to the delegates that he would be the choice!. Mr!. Adams was out of the country at the time, as was Mr!. Jefferson!. Probably because you know!.!.!.The whole 'president' thing hadn't happened before, and the citizens probably thought that Military Service was important - because George Washington was a hero at the time and nobody thought politically in it's aspects!. And also, I don't believe John Adams ran for president at the time (!?) But I'm not sure!. And if he did run for president, ask yourself this!. Why was Jimmy Carter president over Gerald Ford!? Popular amount of votes!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Without Washington there wouldn't be a United States of America(well, maybe something of that form, but not the way it is now)!. To say that Adams did more than Washington, I truly do not understand!. He went to France and the Netherlands and all, with some success, but Washington was the soul of the revolution!. He kept the rag-tag army together!.

Adams ran for the presidency and was 2nd in votes, thus becoming vice president!. That was the rule at the time!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Franklin and Adams, were the consumate politions/ambassadors of their time, doing a great deal off the battle field for the war effort!. I don't know for sure if he ran but I believe he did, as he was often quite bitter & resentful of G!. Washington being President!. Wasn't he later (2nd!?) President!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't think he ran for presidency!. I can't remember that well (i learned this several years ago), but I think he left and went to live somewhere in the mountains and wasn't really seen from again!. If he had ran for presidency, he would have been elected!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Probably because Washington was the Hero of the Moment!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
