It was very difficult for the people in Britain!. They had to live on very very small food rations, and there was a lot of malnourishment!. There was uncertainty because no one knew where their husbands or fathers were!. Many women joined the army too!. Many, many children were evacuated out of the major cities (because of the bombing), and some were never really able to relate well to their parents afterwards!. Some of these children were mistreated and resented by the people where they were billeted!. Many people lost family members in the war, and a lot of civilians were killed in the bombings!. Many cities were badly damaged by bombs!. The city of Coventry in Britain was devastated, as was London during the Blitz!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

I had relatives on both sides of WWII so I'll answer your question from that perspective!. In the United States, the major change was more women in the workplace!. Instead of staying at home and raising children, women had to work and support their children!. They had to find someone to take care of their children while they were at work!. Daycare centers sprung up everywhere!. Basic supplies were rationed, but most were available if you could afford to buy them!.

In Germany, things were quite different!. The windows had to be light sealed with black paper at night so the Allies wouldn't be able to see their targets!. If there was even a pinhole of light coming through the window, the homeowner risked arrest or execution!. There was little opportunity to go to school because most buildings (including schools) were bombed!. Food was for the troops only!. Citizens had to live on very small rations!. If they were found with too much food or too many livestock, they were shot without even a trial!. After the war, the people had to find a way back to normalcy!. Most young women earned a living serving as a maid to the American officers who could afford to pay $20 a week while the men who were left were forced to clean up and rebuild the cities!. There were no young men for the women to marry so most of them married American soldiers!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You mean WWII, right!?

Lots of different troops came by, in Southern Italy!. A lot of them tried to raid our farms for food, which made things tough!. The Germans were the worst here!. The Americans weren't too bad - before they took our animals, you could at least negotiate with
them!. The Canadians were very nice; they smiled and joked with the children, and (with the adolescents) even shared their cigarettes!.

We didn't get to hear the news much - Only one guy in the village (2500 people) had a radio!. But until the soldiers came, we always heard Italy was winning!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
