Basically, the Jeffersonian Republicans are most closely related to today's Democrats!. However, in the antebellum era, the Democrats were mostly Southern supporters of slavery!. It was not until the 20th Century under Wilson and more importantly FDR that the Democrat Party became known for social welfare and bigger government!.

The Republican Party was established in the antebellum period, with an anti-slavery expansion platform!. But throughout the post-war years, the Gilded Age, and later the Roaring 20's Great Depression, the Cold War, and the Reagan years, it became the big business, conservative, and somewhat imperalist party it still is!.
