One theory as to where the "Lost" colonists went is that they were "absorbed" by the Lumbee Indian tribe, which lives today mostly near Lumberton NC!. Many have brilliant blue eyes, and many of the common surnames in the tribe are those of colonists!.

The Lumbees only very recently got Federal recognition as a tribe (the Eastern Band of the Cherokees had stalled this for years)!. A state university in Lumberton, UNC-Pembroke, had its start as the Pembroke Indian Institute!.

If you ever get to Roanoke Island in the summer there's an outdoor drama, "The Lost Colony", which has been presented nightly in an amphitheater overlooking the Sound for many years!. Andy Griffith, who got his first professional acting job playing Sir Walter Raleigh in this production, after graduating from UNC Chapel Hill, still lives on the island today!.

Roanoke Island is in Dare County, named after the "first white child born in the New World", Virginia Dare, who was among the lost!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Roanoke Colony on Roanoke Island in Dare County in present-day North Carolina was an enterprise financed and organized by Sir Walter Raleigh in the late 16th century to establish a permanent English settlement in the Virginia Colony!.
Between 1585 and 1587, groups of colonists were left to make the attempt, all of whom either abandoned the colony or disappeared!. The final group disappeared after a period of three years elapsed without supplies from England, leading to the continuing mystery known as "The Lost Colony!." The principal hypothesis is that the colonists were absorbed by one of the local indigenous populations, although the colonists may possibly have been massacred, by the Spanish or by the Powhatan Confederacy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
