Question: The name of something that a milkman used to make his horse stay still while he was delivering!.!?
My grandma was telling me about when the milkman used to deliver milk!. She said that there was something he used to attach to the horses bridal (I think that is the word) so that his horse would stay in place while he was delivering the milk!. She thought it had a weight on it or something!. Does anybody know what this was called!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I saw one once at a blacksmith demonstration!. It was a heavy
weight with a ring on top!. The horse owner would wrap the bridle through the ring, and the horse stayed put!. The driver would carry the weight in the wagon for when there was no fence or post to tie the bridle to!. He would take the weight out of the wagon and set it on the ground in front of the horse!.

The blacksmith that explained it to me called it a
" horse brake"!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No, but from what I've heard, the owners of the house had to go out to the carriage to buy the milk once the milkman drove to their property!. These horses were VERY well trained, so a simple "halt" "stay" would have probably kept them in place!.!. (have you ever been to an old colonial village and seen how well trained those horses are!?)

Of course, if the horses got spooked, they'd probably start running or act up -- so a weight may have been necessary!. But from everyone who have told me about them (grandparents, elderly, etc), once the 'milkman' pulled up, someone had to go out to buy the milk and the driver really didn't go too far from the horses at anytime!.

It may have been different in other areas though!.!. =)Www@QuestionHome@Com
