It began with the introduction of what was informally referred to as The Childrens Charter which was passed by Parliament in 1908!. This prohibited juveniles under 16 being executed!.

This was expanded in 1933 with the Charter turned back into it's original name as the Children and Young Persons Act and the legal age of execution raised to 18!.

The last execution of someone under that age took place on the 2nd January 1889 when 17 year old Charles Dobel was hanged at Maidstone (along with his 18 year old accomplice William Gower) for the murder of B!.C!.Lawrence!.
However he was not the last to be sentenced to death for 16 year old Harold Wilkins was condemned at Stafford Assizes on November the 18th, 1932 for the sexually motivated murder of Ethel Corey, but reprieved on the grounds of his age!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Britain's Children's Act from 1908 banned the execution of people 16 years or younger!. It was raised to 18 during the 1930s!. The last under eighteen to hang was in 1833 when a 17 year old was hung for murder!. During the 1820s and 30s especially, there was a movement towards reducing the number of crimes that could result in hanging!. One big change in 1832 saw the government ban the dissection or mutilation of the bodies of people who had been hanged!. also, crimes such as theft, shoplifting, forgery, attempted murder and stealing cattle also were removed from the books as captial crimes!. There are reports that a nine year old was hanged in 1831 for setting fires!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
