You are correct and your teacher is wrong!. Egypt is by definition an African nation, albiet one above the Sahara!. It is the home of one of the earliest, and longest lived empires of classical times!. It went into decline around the time some of the southern european nations were rising, i!.e!. Macedonia and Rome!. Eventually Egypt suffered the fate of being conqurered and ruled by these entities!. With the rise of Islam Egypt enjoyed a resurgence of prestige and importance for several centuries!. It became a vassel state to European powers during the colonial period of the 19th and 20th century!. Today, it is once more independent and still seeking to rise once more in importance!. As to why she would attempt to disconnect Egypt from the middle east and Africa, I couldn't say without knowing more about her!. Perhaps she was taught incorrect history herself, and is passing that bad information on!. It could be a form of racism, or she simply cannot bring herself to admit to know knowing, and/or being wrong about it!. Be polite, point out that the Egyptians were building empires, creating engineering marvels, and writing down their history while most Europeans were still living in small villages and just beginning to develop metalworking and agriculture!. And good for you for standing for what you know is correct!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

egypt was once a colony of european countries!.!.!. like Florida was once a colony of Spain!. She prolly just wanted you guys to refer to Egypt being a European country because it was being run by them for a long time!. Alot of times in history class, teaching goes in time periods!. for your next 9 weeks or so you might be studying between the years 1700-1900!. Egypt wont be given back to Africa until the 1900's i believe!. So Technically, it was a country in Africa but it was being run by people in Europe, therefore a European "colony" or countryWww@QuestionHome@Com

Egypt is a polyglot, but is considered part of the Middle East, and has never been part of Europe!. After Alexander the Great, the Pharoahs were Greek (Ptolemy was one of A's generals), and the Nubians married in halfway thorugh the Ptolemy dynasty, so Cleo is part-black!.

Egyptians are Greek, Arab, black, Phoenician/Assyrian/other older groups, and many many other races!. It was one of the trading capitals of the world!. However it is NOT in Europe nor never has been!. Your teacher maybe meant "white rulers," but no one would consider it European!. It has the air of the Middle East through and through!. I've been there, ask her if she has been!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Just because Egypt was controlled by European countries is no reason to say that it is a European nation!. If that were true, your teacher would think that the United States is British!.
Egypt was African loooong before 'white men' 'discovered it!.
Tell the teacher that she is giving false information and request that she retract the statements!. You can always go to the dean or principal for help!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Obviously your "teacher" has the communication skills of a chipmunk!.

When you challenged her, she should have explained the situation as the other answerers here have done!.

At one time, Egypt was controlled by but never physically part of Europe!.

That's like saying the USA is part of Britian because it was once a colony of Britain!. Your teacher really needs to communicate far better with her students!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I agree with Rico!.

Egypt might be classified as a European country in a political sense, but that is long since gone!. Even then it was not part of Europe, but an African country controlled by Europeans!.

Egypt is in Africa from a strictly geographic sense!.

Maybe you and your teacher disagree on semantics!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Egypt is undoubtedly part of Africa!. The ancient Egyptians of the long-lived great kingdom they built were related to the modern Copts, most of whom still live in Egypt!. In the south there are also numerous ethnic Nubians!. Arabs came later, and European colonization not till the 19th century!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Egyptians see themselves as Arab Africans!. Ancient Egyptians saw themselves of Africa as well along with their Kushite and Nubian neighbours!. Those peoples were related after all!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Because, if she really is that dumb, she shouldnt be teaching ANYTHING let alone history/geography!. And whatever college she "earned" her teaching degree at!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.they should revoke it!. Immediately!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

geographically, yes egypt is on the african continent!. however egypt had been colonized by europe until the 1900'sWww@QuestionHome@Com

well it was part of europe during roman times but it wasnt connected to it, it was just another land they owned!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The lies my teacher told me is a very popular book
Its because she learned from the same book she is trying to teach you out ofWww@QuestionHome@Com

Using a possession theory like the other answers and your teacher, then the Philippines are North American since the USA once controlled it!. Vietnam is European because the French use to own them!. The USA is part of Europe as we were under England!. (Hey, we should join the EU)!.
Now since part of Egypt is in Asia, it could be included in Asia!.

As to your teacher, I once had one (many years ago) where he stated the GNP in millions, rather than Billions (Now trillions)!. He fought me until he was shown proof!. Your teacher is wrong, and is trying to defend an indefensible position!. Point out to the higher ups that people have trouble with geography!. This does not help!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Many people, using outdated ideas and text books, cut Africa in half!. The lower, "sub - Saharan" Africa, is considered "African", while the areas north of the Saharan Desert are considered part of the Mediterranean world!. North Africa was conquered first by the Phoenicians (as Carthaginians), then Romans, then the Vandals, then Arabs, and most recently the French, Germans and English, so these countries, like Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Algeria and Morocco all seem to have a more European flavor to them!. But the they are, indeed, physically located in Africa!.

Edit: My answer, as one of the first three people, has nothing to do with white people, per se!. The ancient Egyptians were a mix of a Mediterranean people and Kushite people!. They, in their turn, were conquered by the Hittites, a turkic people!. The Phonecians I mentioned were semetic, just like the Arabs!. And, of course, none of those people were "pure" anything, because they, in all their turns, were conquered and over run by other peoples!. Aren't you, at your tender young age, getting just as rigid and caught up in labels as you accuse your teacher of being!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Egypt wasn't really a European country - although at various times, European countries have had colonies there!. It sounds like you need to clarify with her, whether she means a country that is part of the land mass, or a country that is associated with a European country - which is what colonization was!. If that's the case, North America should be listed as a European country too, because it was colonized by France and England!. It sounds as though she's confused and just doesn't know how to say she was wrong!. Pity, because if you can admit you made an error, you can correct it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Imagine how the world looked to the Romans!.

1) print out a map of Europe and North Africa
2) Draw a line across Africa at roughly the start of the Sahara!. Now do the same through Jordan and Turkey!. Follow the line of the Carpathians, and down to the Alps- then the Rhine - draw a line all the way up to the North Sea!.

This is the Roman world - and to Roman eyes; there is no Africa, there is no Europe, there is no Asia - there is just the Mediterranean Sea, the provinces of Rome, and barbarians!.

Africa, to the Romans was just the name of the province we now call Tunisia!.

So your teacher is partially right, if you are a Roman; but to everyone else Egypt is in Africa!.

Edit - I can only think that this is what she means - because otherwise she is just barking mad - Egypt has never, by any way of measuring, been in Europe!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
