Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
b!. the civil war in England
Not only civil war but the ensuing interregnum of Cromwell and the Commonwealth!. As freedom from persecution on religious grounds was the basis for founding many early colonies, this was less an issue as Puritans took over through Parliament at home, ending with the restoration of Charles II in 1660!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
