Especially in monarchies where primogeniture is not practiced and a clear line of succession is not established Primogeniture is the tradition of the eldest son getting the throne!.

In Medieval Russia, when a noble died any blood relative could claim to be the legitimate heir, Uncles, brothers, etc!. So civil wars happened a lot!.

I also suggest poking around in the history of the Ottoman Empire!. The Sultans had huge harems and lots of sons who all wanted to take over someday!. Plenty of turmoil there!.

They developed a custom called the "Golden Cage",, where instead of bumping off your rival you'd keep them under house arrest in the harem, and dose their food with hashish to keep them docile!.
