Because you are lead by someone, who, although fanatical and maniacal, tells you that your problems are the fault of someone else!. Then he might tell you that the way to fix all your problems is to get rid of the people who he wrongfully accuses and condemns for causing all his/your problems and that you would then feel superior!.

The reality is that most people in fascist Germany and Italy during WW2 were not concerned who lead their country, but hoped that they would get more to eat than they had been getting!. By the time they realised that the people in charge were megalomaniacal despots who were more interested in their own wealth and power, it was too late, and a dictatorship had been established!.
