Question: How to put my ceremonial spear on a war footing!?
I acquired this african ceremonial spear but the blade is not attached!. How do I attach it!? It is leaf-shaped and fits over the top of the shaft!. But I don't know the best way to secure it into place so it won't come loose if say hypothetically I get involved in a skirmish!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
this really depends on the type of spear you have- both the tribe and the intended use

eg Masai spears have a blade on the top and a spike on the bottom of the shaft!. The blade is NOT attached to the shaft, but is taken off before combat- then the spear is thrown with the "bottom end" forward and the blade is used as a hand held short sword in the charge which follows the spear throwing

A Zulu spear is rather short and intended for stabbing!. The ones I've seen use either a leather wrap-around (binding the iron tube of the blade and the shaft) or a cross-wise iron nail which binds the wood and the ironWww@QuestionHome@Com

Well you have the right answer for attaching blade to shaft - - - a strong leather binding HOWEVER just to quibble you did say --------------
""How to put my ceremonial spear on a war footing!? ""
That said - - - the leather should be from the dried calf muscle and leg tendon from an enemy tribesman (and using a woman's calf muscle would be sabotage)!.!.!.!. After tightly binding blade to shaft, you should build a fire in the back yard - - - and just after dark, preferably on a full Moon night - - strip naked - - after few tokes of ceremonial Ganja you ought to dance a minimum of ten times around the fire clockwise first then counter clockwise while chanting a personal mantra along the lines of "Death to My Enemies, Destruction to My Enemies, May their blood flow like a River," and somewhere in there make a slight, only a slight, gash beneath your right breast giving your spear a mere taste of blood, letting it get a taste while promsing it a heftier drink when you meet your enemies in battle!. Several elements are mixed into the dance, along with the ceremonial taste of blood, the blade is passed over the fire, this also tightens up the bindings, naturally the spear is held high over your head most of the time and slashing at the Moon is also recomended! Once you feel you have broken in your spear you can mount it on a wall but always with reverence and a bow, whispering to it that some day it will taste battle!.
