A LOT! Depending on the culture, women would be washing clothes in the morning while the men were out hunting or doing business; knitting and sewing clothes, if they were poor; taking care of children until the rest of the family got home; dealing with diplomatic relations (sort of like a secretary but of a house instead of an office)!. Once the men returned, either with meat they'd hunted or with foods they'd bought (depending on the culture once again, as well as proximity to a city of course), then the women would cook and prepare the dinner for the family!.

Without the traditional roles of women, our forming and expanding societies would have surely collapsed!. Just the thought of leaving men and only men to take care of infants and children alone, should be enough to send a shiver down any woman's spine! Of course, while men as the hunters had the sometimes-unpleasant and physically-demanding role of actually hunting wild animals for his family's survival, most men would be clueless as to good preparation of the meat, and would have a hard time feeding a family with it AFTER spending all day in the woods getting it!. Imagine a society of antiquity without the women!.!.!.

Oh, and to the people saying "everything" -- get a reality check!. The woman's role was and IS vital to society, but so has the man's always been!. No woman in those times, and very few women now, would be able to hunt nearly as skillfully as the men!. Women are nurturing by their very nature, and this is why they adopted the roles they did -- men did what men do best, and women did what women do best!. Common sense!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Depends on which olden days you are speaking of!.
When my daughter was about 12 years old she would say "Mom back in your olden days"
Now, my olden days when I was a teenager, was Elvis Presley, Rock-n-roll music,
females couldn't wear jeans or any type of pants to school or working in the public until the late 1960's!.Most women were stay at home mom's and cleaned house, ironed clothes, washed clothes on old style washers (not automatic washers), hung clothes on a line outside and just doing laundry could take all day, cooked, no microwaves, no fast food joints, did the dishes by hand, took care of their children, waited on their husbands hand and foot!. Some women did have to work outside the home and still do all these things!. Women still didn't have a lot of equal rights!.
If a man was abusive to their wife the law didn't do anything about it ( this part didn't really change until the late 1980's to the early 1990's) and mainly not till after the O!.J!. Simpson murders of Nicole!.
My mother's olden days were worse!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
