Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Apartheid (apartness) was a system was separating the races in South Africa!. It was officially enacted in 1948, when the National Party took control of the government, and lasted until 1994, with the election of Nelson Mandela as South Africa's first black president!. Where as segregation in the United States was based on state and local laws, apartheid was a national policy and enforced by national laws!.

World opinion had an adverse effect on South Africa!. UN sanctions put a severe strain on the South African economy; however the mineral wealth of the country did keep the nation afloat for decades!. Though the whites could afford the sanctions, the poorer races lived in poverty!.

Discontent over apartheid led to several resistance movements, particularly the African National Congress (ANC)!. Mandela led the ANC until he imprisonment on Robbin Island!.
