They brought it with them to Virginia and Massachusetts!.

In the earliest days, right up to the time of the Revolution, going to England was usually referred to as "going home"!.
What landed on the shores of the James and York Peninsula in 1607 and the shores of Cape Cod in 1620 were English speaking, meat eating, Christians who were there mainly to get rich if they could, and to keep the French and Spanish out if they couldn't!.

They were also dealing with a totally new situation!. In England only 1 person in 10 owned land, In New England, 9 persons in 10 owned land!.

The wars overseas, against the Dutch and French, helped expand the colonies into places like New York and Canada, and the failure of other settlements, like the Swedes, absorbed New Jersey into the mix!.

All the rest was either bought, stolen or won by combat!.

We set out on this continent with a language and a belief in English liberties, for the English of course, much as it was at "Home"!. The mistrust of strangers had carried forward from the Normans mistrust of the Anglo-Saxons to the mistrust of the Spanish marriage in 1553, to the Catholic conspiracy scares of the 17th century!. When it arrived here, it included the usual religious divisions, and added in Native Americans and African slaves!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
