I can identify towns where a lot of the following languages were spoken!. Finnish was spoken at Rock, Michigan and Esko, Minnesota!. Dutch was spoken at Pella,Iowa!. Czech was spoken at Spillville, Iowa and Protivin, Iowa!. Croatian and Slovenian were spoken in the "Iron Range," north of Duluth, Minnesota!. Basque was spoken in the sheepherding country around Bakersfield, Calif!. Cornish was spoken in the mining community of Mineral Point, Wisc!. The Swiss dialect was spoken at New Glarus, Wisconsin!. Greek was spoken at Ypsilanti, Michigan!.

People spoke German, Irish Gaelic, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Welsh, Cornish, French, Italian, Dutch, Belgian, Luxembourgeois, Finnish, Scots Gaelic, Basque, Spanish, Greek, Croatian, Serbian, Slovenian, Russian, Hungarian, Yiddish Rumanian, Bulgarian, Turkish, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, etc!. in the US in 1908!.

In addition, Native American languages, such as Cherokee, Sioux, Iroquois, Navajo, Apache, Hopi, Meskwaki and others were spoken!.

There had been immigrants from almost everywhere, by that time!. That's why the US has been called a "Melting-Pot!."

During World War I, the speaking of foreign languages was strongly discouraged in schools and churches, although Catholic Latin was allowed, because it was an ancient language, and few people were fluent in it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
