Strike before being struck - - - keep potential enemies off balance - - - spy exstensively on everyone even spy on your spies - - - make yourself invaluable, as much as many people inside Russia hated Stalin they could not conceive of anyone else having the same ability to hold Soviet Russia Together -- - - - Stalin stayed in power by being viewed as better than the alternatives!. Stalin was clever, not truly intelligent, but clever, and he was 'faithful' to select group of friends whose loyalty kept him from harm!. Stalin was ruthless, without sentiment - - - - if clinging to power meant sending a 'friend' to his/her death, oh well, these things had to be done!. Conversely many who were sent to their death accepted that they had done something wrong and deserved to be punnished ("oh well, you caught me out")!.!.!.!.!.!.
Stalin was ruthless but then Russia's history has never been gentle or genteel thus it is hard to say how good or bad Stalin was for Russia - - - the fact that Russia survived the Nazi onslaught and more or less prospered under Stlin speaks volumes - - - but Stalin did leave a legacy of terror & brutality that numbed the Russian spirit and left a nation paranoid & suspicious of everyone & everything around them!.
Stalin was not a happy man - - - there were times when he could laugh and enjoy a smoke but mostly he was equally bitter & suspicious of everyone & everything and in his final years lived in fear of assasination!. Stalin was bothered by sleepness nights, an upset stomach and hemmerhoids!.

I'll say just one thing that I remember from college history classes about how Stalin exercised power!. A favorite tactic of Stalin's was to aim for his smartest political rival, have him killed, then adopt the dead rival's program!.

Solzhenitsyn thought that one effect of Stalinism was to "weed out" the very best Russians, leaving the mediocre and worse!.

How did piling murder on murder affect Stalin!? He more and more did not want to die---for as good a reason as anyone has in this world!. He knew that everyone hated and feared him, except some extremely ignorant Russians!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
