Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The two primary Cold War alliances in Asia were SEATO (South East Asian Treaty Organization) and the Chinese and Societ alliances with Communist Vietnam and North Korea!. SEATO was created in 1954 as an Asian variant of NATO, and included the following nations: Australia France New Zealand Pakistan Philippines Thailand United Kingdom United States It lasted until 1977, when it was disolved!. However, it should be noted that all those counjtries still maintain fairly friendly relations with each other, and where possible, act in concert!. Chinese relations with Vietnam did a nosedive by the end of the American war in Vietnam!. While the Soviets maintained some ties with the Vietnamese (due to major naval port facilities at Cahm Rahn Bay), the Chinese resented Vietnamese involvement in Cambodia, acting against the Chinese backed Khmer Rouge!. That resentment boiled over into open war in 1979!. The Vietnamese handed the Chinese their heads! The Soviets and Chinjese continued small scale support for North Korea until the Cold War came to an end, and the North Koreans still rely on some aid from the PRC!. Japan is a key US ally in the region, too, of course, as is Taiwan, as well!.Www@QuestionHome@Com |
