By 1943 Auschwitz had grown significantly and now had multiple subcamps, many of which provided slave labor for armaments factories and other industries, eventually generating millions of Reichsmarks for Nazi Germany!. In March new gas chambers and crematoria opened at Auschwitz-Birkenau, dramatically increasing the camp’s killing capacity!. A few hundred yards from Birkenau’s gas chambers and crematoria was an area of the camp the inmates called "Canada!." It was so named because Canada was thought to be a country of great riches!. Inmates’ possessions were taken from them upon arrival and brought there!. The items were sorted and sent back to Germany, although some were stolen by SS guards!.

the wolfsangel yes, but also the symbol of the 2nd SS Panzer Division!. Anyway, the term 'canada' was named for the storage areas from the loot plundered from the jewish victims!. Canada, at the time (right or wrong), was associated with mind boggling riches or value, the initial slang caught on and was used in other buildings where the plunder was sorted for shipment!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

'guess who!.!.!.' and efw were right!.

Within the vast KZ system Nazi's had created many terms and euphemisms may seem strange to most people who do not deal with this topic often or who have a passing interest!.
"Canada" was the vast collection point of all materials that were stripped by the SS from the victims!. These items were sorted out for their intrinsic, strategic, for utilitarian value!. They were just one more commodity the Nazi's stripped from their victims before liquidation!. These untold personal riches that were collected led to the name "Canada" in a belief that this large and vast nation held untold riches and to the inmates and guards within the camp system this name stuck for the collection point!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Canada was known to be home to a lot of Polish and Jewish immigrants who emigrated there in the late 1800's and early 1900's!. It could be related to that, as the Polish and Jews and other enemies of the Nazis were brought to Auschwitz/Canada, much like the fact that they all went to the country!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

guess who at large's answer is dead on!.

And Tyler, if people are going to mistake your symbol for something else all the time - rather than having to explain yourself constantly - it would save you a lot of time and trouble to just use a different symbol!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
