I'll take a shot, but I'll still give you a star!. The first language/languages were probably an extention of sounds and gestures used to communicate among early hominids!. Eventually these simple communications were expanded on, as later humans had to develop new sounds or words for concepts, ideas, and things they had not encountered before!. With the establishment of civilizations, the languages were codified!.
But people and times constantly change!. People in different areas begin pronouncing words slightly differently from each other, or inventing new words, or giving new meanings to old ones!. Over time these changes become enough to first create new dialects, then entirely new languages!. In earlier times, where isolation was more common, many more languages evolved!. Today languages are going "extinct" almost daily, as the few remaining speakers die out!. Even so, our languages continue to evolve!. Just try speaking to Englishmen, Scotsmen, and Irishmen from different parts of their countries!. In some cases they are impossible to understand, just as some of our dialects are nonsense sounds to them!. Things like modern communications, television, movies, etc!. actually help slow down this!. "Standard English" becomes the norm for most performers and media celebrities!.
There are also a few spoken languages that are truly invented!. Esperanto is one!. This is a language that was an attempt to create a "universal" language using easy to learn rules, and pulling words from many languages!. Tolkien is famous for his creation of Elvin languages!. More recently Klingon is a language actually spoken by thousands of people!. So people dont just wait for change; they sometimes actively go out of their way to cause it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't believe they were invented - no person in a workshop tinkering away to create a language!. I think they came about gradually, beginning with basic grunts and similar noises and evolving into basic words!. As people evolved and new technologies came into being we needed new words to describe them!. This is still happening today!. Some languages are similar to each other because words were adopted or conquering nations imposed their language on the defeated!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Have to agree with the above poster, languages, or most of them evolved and are still evolving except dead languages that are no longer spoken as a primary language!.

If we look at German, they have dialects that are formally written and can be classified as sub languages!. Some, possibly sarcastically, try to argue that Dutch is a dialect of German, and I can see some similarities!.

Just as in the spoken word, with differences in pronunciation, time and usage change languages!. The big debate now is texting creeping into formal written English: BTW, LOL, BRB, etc!.

The same thing is happening in the southern U!.S!. in Miami which has a large Cuban population!. They speak Spanish but some have not been formally taught how to speak Spanish and their language has degraded to the point that it's becoming a problem in the Spanish speaking business world!. They've turned this Spanglish, as English and Spanish is mixed together!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Languages evolve over time, but are set into a fixed pattern by great literature!. The literature distinguishes languages from dialects!.

'Official' Italian is the Italian of the region of Tuscany, because that's the language their greatest poet, Dante, spoke in!.

What do you mean invented!? Unless you are talking about esperanto, (http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Esperanto), languages aren't really invented!. But generally, languages are pretty much like any other evolutionary process (Unless you ask Noam Chomsky)!. isolation and separation leads changes over time!. One great example is Latin!. Adopted by the romans, upon their colapse it spread out into french, Italian, spanish , porteugeuse, etc!. Languages like greek and english were all ready around!. Afrikaans is a variation of dutch!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Groups of people all over the world basically needed a form of communication, so they just started making sounds that are supposed to represent what they want to communicate!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
