Question: HIstory buffs on Prussia!?
I am looking up a place where my husbands grandfather was born and I just want to make sure that it's where I think it is!. It says that he was born in Allendorf, Rupland!? Would this be correct in assuming that it's part of what was Prussia!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
not "ruPland" but most probably "ruSSland" (the germans have one letter for a double "s" and it looks a bit like a capital "B"

So the "allendorf" was most likely a village in Russia, settled by German colonists (quite common since the 16th century onwards)!. the name most likely vanished- the soviets were very keen on "russianising" everything and re-naming towns was a favouriteWww@QuestionHome@Com

The only 'Rupland' I am aware of is in reference to Canada!.
I think SCIPI is correct about the russian idea, however there
is a town of Allendorf in Germany today!. In the state of Hesse!.
However while most of Germany was under Prussia by 1871
Hesse had remained an independent duchy but I'm not sure
for how long!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's probably Russland, Russia!.

However, you might be quite right assuming that it was in Prussia, since a large part of what is now Poland, and some part of what is today western Russia and Lithuania, was part of the Kingdom of Prussia!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
