Thank you!Www@QuestionHome@Com Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Here are just two developments in the USSR - late 80s i) Gorbachev (pronounced Gorbachoff) becoming General Secretary of the CPSU (Communist Party of the Soviet Union) - effectively Head of State!. He was young and reform minded - led to the 'Sinatra doctrine' - letting the satellite countries do it their way!. ii) Military failure in Afghanistan - showed many in the satellite countries, and in some of the republics of the USSR that the military / industrial complex could be beaten!. 2 - The satellite states were: Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria and East Germany (DDR) Non-aligned Communist states in Eastern Europe were Yugoslavia and Albania!. The other factor was internal corruption; technologically, Russia was actually decades ahead of the U!.S!. Indeed, the sudden technological explosion of the 1990's coincides with the fall of the wall!.
