Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
1) World War I created a new sense of identity and nationhood among Canadians!. Canada became less deferential to British authority (many thought the Brits had made poor command decisions in the war)!.

2) Canada was very hard hit by the Depression!. This hardship saw the emergence of new politial parties and the implementation of popular protest!.

3) Canada was fully involved in WW2!. Out of a population of 11!.5 million, 1!.1 million served!. 45,000 died and 55,000 were wounded!. Thousands more served in the merchant marines!.

4) Newfoundland joined as a province in 1949!. Liberal government policies focused on social welfare programs such as universal health care and old-age and veterans' pensions!.

5) Trudeau's Patriation of the Canadian Constitution in 1982 included a Charter of Rights and final independence from Britain!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

1!. The Battle of Vimy Ridge played a crucial part in Canadaian history because it was the battle that was won because of Canadians, not just with them!. This was the battle that made the Canadian batallion known and after the war created a sense of nationalism, as well as put Canada on the map since it proved it just wasn't another British territory!. Monuments honouring the Canadian soldiers are common in both Canada and Europe!.

2!. Winnipeg General Strike (it occurred in 1919, so it's up to you if you think it's acceptable): It was the huge anger and disapproval of workers that led to the creations of unions throughout Canada, many which are still around today!.

3!. D-Day: Juno Beach was one of the 5 landing sites, but this was spearheaded by Canadian troops, not American of British!. Once more, this increased Canada's standing in the world, and is a cause for nationalism!.

4!. Suez Canal Crisis: At the end of crisis, future Canadian Prime Minister Lester Pearson brought up the idea to United Nations of a peace-keeping force!. Due to this, Canada contributes a lot to peace-keeping forces; a fact that the country is well-known for!.

5!. Quebec Referendums (1980 and 1995): Obviously, Quebec's want to secede from Canada hugely influences Canada today, as it is a huge factor in politics, with the Bloc Quebecois party!.

Hope all that helps!Www@QuestionHome@Com
