Question: What is a hobbit!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
In J!. R!. R!. Tolkien's legendarium, Hobbits are a diminutive race that inhabit the lands of Middle-earth!. Known as "Halflings" to most and "Periannath" by the Elves, the word "Hobbit" is derived from the name "Holbytlan" which means "hole-dwellers" in the tongue of the Rohirrim (actually, Old English)!.

Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Peregrin Took and Meriadoc Brandybuck are the four hobbit heros in J!.R!.R Tolkien's book The Lord of the Rings!.

According to the author, Hobbits are a "variety"[1] or separate "branch"[2] of the race of Men, but they consider themselves a separate race!. They live in the Shire and in Bree in northwestern Middle-earth!.

Hobbits first appear in the book The Hobbit, and also play a major role in The Lord of the Rings!. They are very briefly mentioned in The Silmarillion!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm guessing since this is in history you don't want the Tolkien variety!. In real life, the hobbit was a member of the homo genus (aka related to humans and apes) that lived only on an island in Indonesia!. The scientific name is homo floresiensis!. They were smaller than other human-like species like homo sapiens!. In fact, the average height (or at least from what we know) was around only a metre, and they survived up until 12 000 years ago!.

That's probably the type of hobbit you want!.

P!.S!. Unfortunately the genus is censored out, but hopefully you understand what I mean!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
