Because France is, historically, one of the United States' oldest friends and allies!.

Although the relationship between France and the U!.S!. have waxed and waned over the years, the two countries pretty much owe each other their existence - with the French helping the United States win freedom from England, and the United States repaying France the favor in the World Wars!.

Specifically, it was presented to the U!.S!. by the people of France in celebration of the U!.S!.'s first centennial!. The idea of a gift was pressed by édouard René de Laboulaye, a French assemblyman / politician / poet, who was an admirer of the United States Constitution and observer of American politics!.

The gift also helped out France in some ways!. The Statue was created shortly after the fall of the French Second Empire and the creation of the French Third Republic!. A symbolic gift to France's "sister republic", embodying ideals that were suppressed under the Second Empire, acted as a focus for the republican cause against factions who wanted to return to monarchism!.

Fun fact: there are multiple replicas of Lady Liberty in France, including a sister statue in Paris on the river Seine, as well as one in Colmar, the hometown of Frédéric Bartholdi (the sculptor of the Statue)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Statue of Liberty National Monument officially celebrated her 100th birthday on October 28, 1986!. The people of France gave the Statue to the people of the United States over one hundred years ago in recognition of the friendship established during the American Revolution!. Over the years, the Statue of Liberty has grown to include freedom and democracy as well as this international friendship!.
