LOL I just read in school that before liquid shampoo people would use like baby powder or even flour and apply to the scalp only, cause the powder will asorb the oils!.!.!. I think they even made "dry shampoo" wich was just a powder!. ( I am hair school )Www@QuestionHome@Com

They used soap!. All the washing that takes place today - daily showers etc!. - is a relatively new phenomenon!. A century ago, people washed once a week - Saturday night was bathnight!. And three centuries ago, people were bathed three times in their life - when they were born, when they got married, and when they died!. It was commonly thought that too much bathing weakened a person!.!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Let's see how far back do you want to go!. In the old west they used Lye soap before that they used an herb that once smashed and rubbed between your hands lathered up and smelled good I don't remember the name of it but I have gotten to smell it once at a wicca convention!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't remember specific names, but there are saponificating plants (I'm not sure if I used the right tense there) that essentially make soap!.

They've been used since the Babylonians were around!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Ancient Romans used Olive Oil as soap and as shampoo!. Most people probably didn't bother washing their hair, they just made sure that was nothing in it so all they used was water!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think people also used cornmeal to absorb extra oil!.
I think for "shampoo", they probably just used lye-based soap!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

They made lye soap and used it as an all purpose soap and shampoo!. They used vinegar or lemon juice as a rinse and to lighten their hair!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
