For small cuts (what we would use a bandaid for), they used sticking plasters or sometimes a honey and oil ointment!. For a long time they thought butter was good for burns which we know now is wrong!.

For wounds, they often splashed alcohol on them before wrapping a bandage around them!. They used various herb poultices to draw out infection!.

Penicillin was unknown at this time and antiseptics were not widely used!. A lot of people died from infection!. Until Florence Nightingale revolutioned nursing, cleanliness was not thought to be necessary!.

By the way, Florence Nightingale did not believe in germs!. She never ever saw a germ in her life!. She DID believe in clean!. Soldiers put in her care had a 70% survival rate over those who were not!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Some sort of available cloth!. Although my dear grandmother used to use ground black pepper for small cuts and scrapes!. She said that it had a natural pain reducer and would stick to the wound via the bodies own fluids!. Peace&Love be with you!.!.!.~M~Www@QuestionHome@Com
