Union soldiers were more than willing to rob, rape, and murder African Americans in the South!. They were no more liberators than their Confederate counterparts were enslavers!. In fact, there were Blacks who served in the Confederate army, and I even know a decendant of one!. I recently watched the eposode "80 acres of Hell" on the history channel which delt with Camp Douglas prision in Chicago during the Civil War!. It showed how Union troops held an unspoken rule to execute Black Confederates when found!. I know of another man whose family were slave holders and two of their slaves were raped to death by Sherman's men!. The story has been in his family for years!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Probably as inferiors!. There was still a lot of racism, whether people were for or against slavery!. When African Americans began to fight in the Union Army, they were still segregated from the whites!. It wasn't until the Vietnam War that whites and blacks fought side by side!. A lot of whites in the Union Army didn't even want to fight in the war!. It's interesting to note that Grant himself had slaves before the war began (his wife certainly did)!. You need to remember the Civil War was NOT about slavery in the first place!. The Southern States had seceded from the Nation!. Lincoln told them he would even let them keep their slaves, if they were to join the Union again!. They refused, and thus the Civil War began!. It was only later that Lincoln came out with the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed the slaves!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It varies greatly with the various groups!. For example, many Northern immigrants from Europe (at the time, most usually Ireland), viewd blacks as rivals and they rioted to resist being drafted to go fight for the freedom of slaves!. Many other Northern whites were more focused on preventing the South from breaking the Union, and they likely held what we would call racist views today, but which were simple ignorance!. Some Northern whites, most especially in New England, were very compassionate and empathatic with blacks and viewed them as equals and as fellow humans held in vile bondange!. Its hard to tell exactly, but I would agree with all of the answers!. Contrary to popular belief, the Civil War wasn't fought to free slaves!. Not all northern white men were against blacks, but I would say they probably really didn't care about them Im afraid to say!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't agree that the Northerners were racist!.!.!.!.at least not to the extreme that the Southerners were!.!.!.!.after all, most of the slavery took place in the south!.

Canadians are not much less racist than any other white man on the planet there were black slaves here and we treated our native first nations like dirt!
