Bismarck wanted war because he was confident that Prussia would win, but wanted to trick the French into being the ones who started it!. And it worked, Napoleon III declared war!.

During the war, at the Battle of Sedan, the Germans decisively beat the French and Napoleon III was captured!. With Napoleon III in German hands, his Second French Empire was overthrown in a coup and replaced by the Third Republic!.
