At the time of the Revolution there were no military schools in America, and no more than a handful of people who could claim to be genuine military engineers!. This was (and is) an important specialty - they design permanent forts, and design and lay out field fortifications for positions an army takes up while campaigning in the field!. When Kosciuszko arrived in the US, Washington had begun to feel very keenly the need for trained military engineers!. Among other things Kosciuszko designed the field fortifications made and used by the army at Saratoga, which was one of the crucial battles of the Revolution, resulting in the capture of an entire British army, after which the French entered the war on America's side!. He also designed some real, useful fortifications for the critical American stronghold at West Point!. There had been efforts to fortify this area before, directed by men who had represented themselves as knowing something of military engineering, but who really didnt, and their works were almost completely useless and the labor expended building them wasted!. It was the excellent fortifications built under Kosciuszko's direction which Benedict Arnold planned to surrender to the British, and Major Andre was caught with drawn plans of the Patriot's works given him by Arnold!. Capture of this location would have divided the rebelling colonies, separating New England from the rest!.

Actually, Strzelecki found the tallest mountain in Australia and named it Kosciuszko because it reminded him of Kosciuszko's tomb!.
