I think you're talking about Roanoke, the first English colony in the "New World"!. I think it was in Virginia, but don't quote me on that!.

The story is that the land around Roanoke was tough to farm and very swampy, leading to food shortages and disease for the English settlers!. One of their number went back to England for supplies, but got delayed by either war with Spain or some sort of government bureaucracy (taxes!?); by the time he returned (remember: back then a cross Atlantic trip could take six months or more under good conditions), the entire colony had disappeared!. The only sign left behind was the word "CROATOAN" carved into a tree!.

I think the word had something to do with a local tribe of Indians that were thought to be friendly (I think), and some folks believe that they welcomed the sick and hungry settlers and simply absorbed them into their tribe!. But no one knows for sure, even to this day!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If it was Sir Walter Raleigh's colony at Roanoake, the word on the tree was "Croatan!."

The Norwegian colony of West Greenland also disappeared, but I don't remember any word on a tree associated with it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
