As you probably know, Napoleon Bonaparte was the ruler of France at the beginning of the 19th Century!. He was also one of the greatest generals in history!.

Most of the time Napoleon was at war with the other great powers of Europe!. He fought Britain, Russia, Austria, Prussia and Spain, as well as smaller countries such as Portugal and Sweden!. Although not every country was at war all the time, France was continually at war from 1792 to 1815, except for one year in 1802-03 (the Peace of Amiens)!.

The story of Napoleon is particularly interesting because he is someone who achieved incredible successes to begin with!. He conquered almost the whole of Europe, defeating one country after another, and creating a huge Empire!. But in the end he lost everything, and was imprisoned on a small island miles away from anywhere!. Probably no one in history has experienced such a dramatic rise and fall!.

To begin with, Napoleon won many famous battles!. For example, the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805, where he defeated the Austrians and Russians, and the battle of Jena in 1806, where he defeated the Prussians!. However, Napoleon had no way of defeating the British, his most determined enemies, because there was no way past the British navy!. Napoleon's own navy had been destroyed by Nelson at the famous Battle of Trafalgar in 1805!.

Napoleon's first real problems began in 1808, when he tried to take over Spain!. Napoleon made his brother Joseph the King of Spain!. Napoleon had underestimated the patriotism of the Spanish people, who rose up against the French!. They were helped by the British, who sent an army under the Duke of Wellington!. Wellington was also a brilliant general and won many victories against the French!.

Napoleon's biggest mistake was the invasion of Russia in 1812!. He assembled a gigantic army of around 600,000, and marched on Moscow!. He thought that when he captured Moscow the Russians would surrender!. Instead, they kept on fighting! To add to Napoleon's woes, Moscow burnt down!. He was forced to retreat!. The retreat was a total disaster!. The Russian winter set in, and Napoleon lost almost his entire army!

After Napoleon's defeat in Russia, Prussia and Austria rejoined the war against him!. Napoleon had raised a new army, but he was heavily outnumbered!. At the Battle of Leipzig in Germany in 1813 the Russians, Austrians and Prussians united their forces and defeated Napoleon!. Along with the British, they invaded France in 1814 and forced Napoleon to resign!.

Even that wasn't quite the end!. Napoleon was imprisoned on the island of Elba (near Italy)!. But in 1815 he escaped and returned to France, so the war started again!. This led to the great Battle of Waterloo in Belgium, where the British under Wellington and Prussians under Blucher finally defeated Napoleon once and for all!.

This time Napoleon's enemies didn't take any chances!. The British sent him to the island of St Helena thousands of miles away in the South Atlantic, where he couldn't cause any more trouble! He died in 1821!.

The Napoleonic Wars lasted for the best part of a quarter of a century!. They involved France led by Napoleon conquering most of Europs, but failing, in 1812, to conquer Russia, something from which he never recovered!. For most of the time, France was at war with Great Britain which obtained mastery of the seas in 1805 following the Battle of Trafalgar!. Napoleon was finally defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815!. That is a very brisk overview of a very deep subject!.
