A feudal state is one organized into areas controlled by independant rulers, like duchies or realms!. England used to be a feudal state in the middle ages, when there were countless barons, dukes, and even kings who ruled their own little areas from their castles!. Think Robin Hood or King Arthur, and you'll have the idea!. (These are fictional characters, by the way - but their environment was based on fact)!. Disputes were settled by neighboring rulers having fights (or feuds) to control territory!. Hence 'feudal', y'see!.

One correction, although similar and apparently with the same origin, Feudal comes from the Latin language and means free of rent land!. Feud is from the Old German and means enmity!. Otherwise the answer from the first poster is OK!. Feudal state was a territory granted to a noble for which he didn't pay to the crown, although he could tax and exploit the peasants!. A feud was a conflict between anyone, not necessarily a feudal lord!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
