On four separate occasions during 1919-1921 the US Army was ordered to intervene in coal mine strikes on behalf of the mine owners!. During the last one in 1921 Billy Mitchell assembled 14 bombers in West Virgina!. They did no bombing, but Logan County Officials did rent commercial aircraft and attempt to bomb the strikers from the air with homemade bombs!. They missed and the bombs failed to explode, but this gave rise to a rumor that the Army Air Corps had bombed civilians!.

Indiana Joe, youre recalling the 1932 Bonus Marchers - the BEF!. These were very patriotic American veterans of WWI who had lost all during the Depression!. They came to Washington to seek early payment of their WWI service "bonus", a $500 paid up life insurance policy, not due until 1945!. The had their families with them as they were mostly homeless!. They squatted in empty buildings and made a Hooverville on the Mall!. The Washington PD and the Army, with MacArthur in personal command, along with his aide Lt Col Dwight Eisenhower, dispersed the strikers!. Only a few were killed!. George Patton commanded the Army's Whippet tank detachment during the incident!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
