Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Roma (people), commonly known as Gypsies, a traditionally nomadic people found throughout the world!. While the term gypsy is often attached to anyone leading a nomadic life, the Roma share a common biological, cultural, and linguistic heritage that sets them apart as a genuine ethnic group!.
When they first arrived in Europe over 500 years ago, the Roma were called Gypsies in the mistaken belief that they had come from Egypt!. The true origins of the Roma remained a mystery until the late 18th century, when European linguists discovered connections between the Romani language and certain dialects spoken in northwestern India!. More recent linguistic and historical studies have confirmed that the Roma originated in India!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There isnt one!.

Real ETHNIC Gypsies are actually originally from north western India!.

Modern Linguists and Ethnologists have pretty much pinpointed their Language as originating from Northern India, and it is related to Indo European (Aryan) languages spoken there, although Roma has been much altered over time!.

also, Ethnically, their DNA has been pinpointed as having its roots in this region!.

The terms Roma and Gypsy are products of the Dark Ages and Middle Ages, when people wrongly thought they came from Romania or Egypt!. In those days people knew little or nothing about Linguistics or Ethnology!.

Egyptians are a Semitic people, of either Ancient Egyptian(ie Coptic) or Arab origin!. Gypsies are Indo European, in Ethnicity and in Language, so there is no connection!.

Real Gypsies as found in Eastern Europe, Asia Minor and Middle East should not be confused with Didekoys, Travellers or Pikeys, these other groups are of European, mainly Irish origin, and are mainly found in Britin and Ireland!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Despite the name, Gypsies have nothing to do with Egypt!. They were originally a trading caste from India who followed trading opportunities across Asia, and eventually fetched up in Europe!.

Their language (Romany), I am told, has connections with the languages of the Indian subcontinent, and many of their customs, though naturally changed after such a long separation, also relate to Indian ways!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

As far as I know, Gypsies come from India, not from Egypt!. They were a nomadic people, living in tents and caravans!. Back in the 18th century or so, some of them arrived to eastern Europe, where they became slaves and were forbidden to move from one place to another!. Nowadays, they mostly stay in one place and don't travel around that much!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

i believe the gypsies were from India and they claimed to be descendants of the soldiers of Alexander the Great and the Indian women they took as wives or mistresses!. this may be helpful;;;Okay, here's what i found about the origin of the Gypsies:

from _The Languages of the World_, by Kenneth Katzner!. (c) 1977 and 1986 by the author!. Published by Routledge!. ISBN 0-415-04604-1

begin quote:
Romany [author's note: i've also seen "Romani" -cgk] is the language of the Gypsies!. The origin of the gypsies was long a matter of speculation!. The English word "Gypsy" stems from an early belief that they came from Egypt!. This has now been disproved!.

The question was resolved by the science of linguistics!. [author's note: science of linguistics!? whatever!.!.!.!. -cgk] Detailed study of the Gypsy language has shown that Gypsies originally came from India!. The common features it shares with Sanskrit and with later Indian languages can lead to no other conclusion!.

The Gypsies are believed to have begun their migration westward about 1000AD!. Loanwords in their language from Persian, Armenian, and Greek provide some indication of the general course of their travels!. Today, Gypsies are to be found in many countries of both Eastern and Western Europe as well as in the United States!. A rough estimate of their numbers would be in the neighborhood of 5-6 million!.

end quote!.

Considering that they are spread out all over the place, and there are only 5 to 6 million of them, they would have to be astonishingly efficient to be guilty of all the crimes of which they are accused, including robbing tourists at every train station in Southern and Eastern Europe, and of course their new sideline of gassing tourists actually travelling on the night trains!. (On rec!.travel there is at the moment a shockingly unfunny thread in which one gentleman is claiming everyone who goes to a Gypsy family's home will be killed, and every woman who goes to a secluded spot with a Gypsy man will be raped - he "guarantees it"!.)

My personal suspicion is that anyone acting unsavory in an area with a good-sized Gypsy population is labeled a Gypsy by non-Gypsy locals!.!.!. and the behavior of these individuals is used to "prove" that "all Gypsies are like that"!.!.!.!.

Hard to tell, however!. As far as i've been able to find out, there never were that many Gypsies in Norway!. (The climate is not exactly conducive to a nomadic lifestyle, to put it mildly!.) Certainly there are few today, not enough to make much impact!. So my usual sources for historical information are no help at all here!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
