Question: Anyone know this WWII story!?
I recently heard a story of a tragedy that happened during WWII!. It was about the US finally figuring out the Nazi code and they heard a message about the Germans about to bomb this city, they had the choice of saving the city, but letting the germans know they knew their code, or sacraficing the city and using the code later on!. I was wondering if this "story" was true, if so what were the specifics!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

This is certainly a reference to the bombing of Coventry in 1940!. However, the claim that the British knew in advance of the raid is a widespread myth!. There is a detailed description of what happened here:

The US did not break the German Enigma code!.
The information about the German Enigma machine was leaked to the French, the machine was first reconstructed by a Pole, and the Bletchley Park code breakers broke the code!.

This sounds like a true story that has occurred and been repeated by all sides in many wars!.

To avoid allowing the enemy full knowledge of break throughs in intelligence many places and people are sacrificed during wartime, not just during World War Two!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It was the British who had broken the code, and the city that was sacrificed was Coventry!. It happened in November 1940!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
