Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Lincoln was probably one of our smartest presidents!. He was one the better diplomats!. He had a cabinet that hated each other, yet he was able to get them to see past their differences and do their duty!. Lincoln would not have made it in today's politics!. Lincoln had way too much honor for the politicians of today!. Lincoln did his duty for the country during the darkest periods of American history!. No other President could have done it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com The actions taken by President Lincoln, particularly related to the writ of habeus corpus, would have probably been just as unpopular in 2008 as they were in 1863!. The constitution permits the President more latitude with habeus corpus in cases of national crisis or rebellion, and the situation between April 12 1861 and April 9, 1865 would have qualified as both a national crisis and a rebellion!. Lincoln had no magical powers to make everything right again, the war proved that, he just happened to be faced with a much more serious crisis than we face today!. The only Presidents who I can think of who were in the same position are Hoover, with the Depression, FDR with the Depression and G!.W!. Bush with the September 11 attacks!. Two of those four Presidents managed to see us through the crisis, Hoover was probably not given enough of a chance, and it appears that Dubya may have manipulated public sentiment so that Saddam would be dealt with once and for all!. I am beginning to think that people may have judged him as being unintelligent in order to keep from coming to the conclusion that he was deliberately acting in a self serving way!. Lincoln was a good politician who understood his constituents, was willing to compromise, and retained his ideals!. He was good at 'reading' people and actually rather charming in a folksy kind of way!.
