Slavery had been an issue since the beginning of the country!. John Adams and James Madison were totally against it!. Jefferson and Washington had slaves of their own but Jefferson also opposed it!. He was a hypocrite in my opinion!. In general the Southerns were for it because their plantations were only profitable because of the slaves!. Most people in the North didn't own slaves and were against slavery!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I had the impression that John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin wanted slavery in the Declaration of Independence!. They had to drop it to get support from the southern colonies!.

I'm not sure about the constitutional debates!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I believe it was Benjamin Franklin who petitioned to end slavery!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
