Your friend is wrong!. I only just finished eighth grade, but this answer your friend gave shows no sense!. I was pretty lazy last year, but through prior knowledge anyone can answer your question!.

First, the people living under the rule of the Persian Empire were almost entirely Arabs!. The ruling kings of Persia were all Arabs themselves!. The Persian Empire used to occupy Iran and nearby regions, and the descendents of Persia came to occupy all of the current Arabic nations!. The Persian Empire was not blocking Arabs from crossing land!. They did create Arabic enemies, but this was on national lines!. Just because Persia was made up of Arabs, doesn't mean other Arabic groups were friends with them (for instance, early Jews and Persia did not get along well)!. However, whatever diplomatic relations that the Persian Empire held with other Arabic countries, there was not a major event involving the Persian Empire blocking other Arabs from crossing across Asia!.

Secondly, your friend says that the Arabs took goods from India and China to reach Europe!. That is not true!. No Arabic group did this, but a specific group would need to be mentioned for a more clear answer!. There was a specific group of nomadic Arabs that invaded India and looted their cities!. These Arabs were called the Moghuls!. The Moguhls came from North and West of India, and gathered in great numbers, conquering a fair portion of Northern India!. The Moghuls were descendants of Genghis Khan, and shared familiar fighting styles!. After the Moghuls looted and occupied the area that is modern day India, the Moghuls mostly kept the goods for themselves!. Part of the goods may have been traded with neighboring entities, and of that history remains unclear!. However, the Moghul Empire never participated in trade among the Silk Road or across the Atlantic, so the Moghuls themselves did not take foreign goods to Europe!. The goods that the Moghul Empire traded locally may have then been traded to more distant lands, such as Europe and Africa, but the Moghuls did not drive this long distance trade!.

also, no Arabic group ever invaded China (other than the Mongols, few outsiders every invaded China!. If you consider the Mongols to be Arabs, then Arabs did invade China, as the Mongols shared racial similarities to Arabs)!. If your friend meant that Arabs traded India and China for goods and then traded those goods with Europe, through land and sea trade, then he would be correct!. Some Arabs did contribute to long distance international trade!. Actually, most Arabs did (excluding the Moghuls)!. These trading Arabs became famous for their scientific developments, devotion to the spreading of Islam, and European like civility!. These Arabs included the somewhat weaker and revised Persian Empire, and a multitude of different mixes of Arabs occupying the land of modern day Saudi Arabia, Israel, Syria, Iraq, and Iran, along with other countries of this area!. The Arabs spread into Northeastern Africa, and continued to expand there trade through the Meditteranean!. Most Arabs occupyed desert regions, though through their trade and development they managed to survive and expand signifigantly!. Arabs were certainly not in an embargo (which is a ban on trade with a certain group or with everyone in general), and even if some minor Arab settlements were, it would be unrelated to the outside powers!. The only reason the Arabs were forced to occupy a desert was because all the other land had already been settled (and to compensate for their unfortunate land, some Muslims invaded the edges of Europe, Africa, and India, as explained before)!. All of the Arabic groups were un-officially aligned through ethnic similarity!.

Lastly, you friend was correct on one thing!. Because the Arabs occupied regions that had high amounts of oil, when the empires and civilizations governing there in the past dissapated, and we arrived at the age where oil was extremely valuable, it was mostly Arabs that still occupied the oil rich areas (the Middle-East)!. Because of the Arabic rule in this land from about the eighth to the seventheenth centuries (A!.D!.), Arabs continued to occupy oil rich land and still do now!. However, when oil became of use, the Arabic nations began to seperate due to the slight differences in their religious beliefs!. Nearly all Arabs were Muslim, but among Islam, there are further boundaries!. When the Shiite Muslims and the Sunni Muslims began to fight, control in the Middle East soon evaporated, and through events in the twentieth to the twenty-first century, Arabs arrived at where they are today!. The Middle East was once an advanced network of different divisions of Arabs, but this did not hold up!. The modern Middle East is full of terrorism, voilence, and anti-American hate!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You're friend is wrong, but maybe not completely!.

Arabs were surely settled in the deserts long before oil was discovered!. The oil was only discovered in the 20th century!. But Arabs had been in Arabian desert for thousands of years!. The oldest archeologist evidences suggest they originally came from Yemen (south of Arabia)!. They had some ancient civilization over their, & another one in what is today Bahrain!.

Some Arabic tribes migrated from Yemen & settled in different parts of the Arabian desert!. Some had migrated to the outskirts of Iraq & Syria!. Those in Iraq became allies to the Persian empire & those in Syria allied with the Byzantium empire!.

The Persians didn't force all Arabs to stay in the desert!. Many Arabs were merchants, & they traveled to different parts of the world (African, Egypt, Iraq, Syria, even Persia itself)!.

& of course during the 7th century, Arabs who had newly converted to Islam conquered Persia & 2/3 of Byzantium!. Many Arabs had settled in Spain, Portugal, & Sicily!. So no, they were not locked in the deserts!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Long before oil was discovered, there were Berbers who lived as nomads on the Arabian peninsula!. They had a very hard life!. Arabs who lived in coastal cities and engaged in trade had an easier life!.
In the first 100 years or so after Mohammad, there were great conquests by the Arabs, partially motivated by the new religion which prohibited them from attacking or stealing from other Muslims!. (Some of the Berbers had previously survived by thievery, extracting tribute from the city dwellers, etc!.) But conquest of non-Muslims in the name of Islam was considered noble!.
The Arabs conquered Iraq, Palestine, North Africa, Spain, Persia, what is now Turkey, other areas of Asia near the Aral and Caspian seas, and, of course, India!. They did not conquer China!. The conquest of the Persians was actually rather swift!.
There is a recent book entitled The Great Arab Conquests which goes into great detail!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
