Question: Prohibition and Industrialism, coincidence!?
Since the early 1800's people had been trying to ban alcohol!. But that was nearly impossible due to the fact that good drinkable water was scarce!. Thats why beer/ale/wine or whatever else has been drunk by everyone since the Egyptians!. Do you think the fact that prohibition didn't happen until the 1900's can be attributed to the vast improvements in technology and people being able to use clean, drinkable water!? Thats the only reason I can see this happening so late!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The reason why people in the USA wanted prohibtion and got it in the 1920's was:
1!. many people thought that working men who drank
squandered away their pay on drink and beat up their
wives!. So stop drinking stop the working man abuse!.

2!. It was wasting grain that was used to make the alchohol!.
Europe was at war and there was a grain shortage!.
Eating the grain and not drinking the grain sounded better
to those who made the laws!.

3!. The conservative rural people thought that the wicked
urban/city people would not be so wicked if they
stopped drinking!.

The quality of the water by the 1920's really did not have
that much to do with prohibition!. It was a social law which
tried to regulate morality and the American people would
not take kindly to this attempt!.

Hope that helps!.

That's probably not the reason!. What was happening in the US (the only modern country to adopt prohibition) was that evangelical Christians, who had been mainly poor, ill-educated rural folk, were beginning to move into the urban middle class and obtain more political power!.
Prior to that, there had been plenty of dry local regions, almost exclusively in rural areas and mainly in the South!.
There was also an alliance between the religiously oriented drys and two other groups -- advocates of woman suffrage and urban do-gooders!. The first of these were against alcohol because excessive drinking was more common among men and women, and there was a general view that women voting would raise the general moral level of politics (an expectation that was quickly killed)!. The second group took the view that any measure that controlled the lower classes was a good thing!. And indeed, people with money had little trouble getting alcohol during national Prohibition!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

This would be a good question for a history paper!.
I think industrialization probably gave people more spare time to drink so that alcoholism really became a bigger problem than it ever was before!. Before industrialization, the US was primarily agricultural, which required constant attention!. There were no weekends or off days!. After industrialization, people had more time to themselves for other pursuits!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
