There are lots and lots of websites out there that can help you do research into your family history!. Depends on which part of the world you are looking at but if you're researching ancestors in England I would suggest

FamilySearch (has some parish record transcriptions and free access to the 1881 census for England and Wales)

Genuki (good site that covers all the basics of how to undertake research in the UK and Ireland and takes you through relevant links for whichever part of the UK you're looking at)

FreeBMD (this website is a free listing of birth, marriage and death registrations in England and Wales!. It won't give you the full details as you need to apply to the General Register Office for them but it will supply you with the index and volume numbers so you can order more cheaply)

Before you start searching though and start spending any money make sure you sit down and pull together everything you already have and make plans for what you want to know!. It is impossible to follow every single branch of the family so choose which branch(s) you want to concentrate on!. Talk to family and try and get them to fill in as many blanks as possible, as this will save you time and money in the long run!.

When you do decide what you want to research and have exhausted family sources a really good thing to do is make a list of the exact things you want to find out, and notes about how you hope to get the information e!.g!.
1) Grandma's date of birth - apply for Grandma's birth certificate
2) Grandma's mother's maiden name - listed on Grandma's birth certificate
3) Great grandma's siblings - 1901 census

geni and genes reunited are good, although genes reunited you cant add photos of family unless you pay for an upgrade and you cant send messages to people if you find a match unless you pay for an upgrade so!.!.!.!.
I've just registered to geni and haven't had enough time to have a look at it!.
