Virginia official records 1827 chap!. 139 Jefferson's will begged the Virginia legislature to let 5 of his mulatto children stay in the state Burwell, Joe Fessel,Joe Hemmings, Madison and Eston Hemmings the last three are by black Sally!. There is no proof that Sally Hemings was freed by Jefferson when he died!. Jefferson was deeply in debt at the time and had to sell most of the slaves that he had!. He freed a few families and gave some of the other slaves to his daughter!. Sally had 5 children by him!. It appears that she was able to keep her children!. When Jefferson died, she and her family were given freedom and most moved away from Monitcello!.
