Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Al Capone was Chicago's (and America's) most notorious mobster during the Prohibition era and ruled an empire of bootlegging, gambling, prostitution, business and labor racketeering, protected by an army of gunmen and corrupt police and politicians!. He fought wars with rival gangsters over control of the lucrative beer and booze trade, resulting in hundreds of unsolved murders!. The most notorious of these was the St!. Valentine's Day Massacre of February 14, 1929, in which seven (not fifteen as another answerer stated) of the rival "Bugs" Moran gang were machine-gunned by gunmen disguised as police officers and presumed to have been members of Capone's gang!.

Capone was named Public Enemy Number One by the Chicago Crime Commission in April 1930, the first criminal ever to bear that title!. He was brought down not by the FBI but by the Internal Revenue Service!. Capone was convicted of income tax evasion on October 17, 1931, sentenced to 11 years, and fined $50,000, plus $30,000 in court costs!. He was sent first to the federal penitentiary in Atlanta in 1932, then transferred in 1934 to the new federal penitentiary on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay!. His health failing from years of untreated syphilis, Capone was released from prison in November 1939!. He died at his palatial estate in Palm Island, Florida on January 25, 1947, just eight days after his forty-eighth birthday!.

Capone's organization, known as "the Outfit," continued under new leadership and remained a powerful force in Chicago crime and politics for decades afterward!.

To correct another answerer, Eliot Ness had nothing to with Capone's conviction, though he and his team, known as "the Untouchables," did considerable damage to Capone's bootlegging operations!. And Ness was never an FBI agent!. He was an agent of the Treasury Department's Prohibition Bureau!.

p!.s!. Capone never wore a "top hat!." He wore fedoras and straw boaters!. He was popularly known (though never to his face) as "Scarface", the result of a knifing in a barroom fight in Brooklyn in 1917!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Al Capone is probably America's best known gangster, and a symbol of the total collapse of law and order in the US during the 1920s Prohibition era!. He was the main target and the "biggest fish" netted by Elliot Ness in the early days of the FBI!. Capone ran most of the illegal activities that gave Chicago its reputation as the most lawless city in the US!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
