Question: Is Britain the only traditionally Protestant country in a mainly Catholic Europe!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
No!. There are others, and also at least two more strands of Christianity!.

Protestantism actually started with Jan Huss in Bohemia in the 1400's, followed by Germany with Martin Luther in the early 1500's, and then there was Calvin and Zwingli in Switzerland, all before it took hold in Britain!.

Today, the PROTESTANT countries in Europe are - Britain, Holland, Sweden, Denmark,Finland, Norway, Iceland, Estonia,Latvia, Faero Islands!.

Belgium is about 50 - 50 between Protestant and Catholic, Germany, Hungary and Switzerland are predominantly Catholic, but have large Protestant Minorities!.

also, much of Europe is actually neither Protestant or Catholic, but ORTHODOX!.

The Orthodox countries are - Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Montenegro, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Greece, Cyprus, Belorus!.

There are also a number of MUSLIM countries in Europe, These are; Bosnia, Albania, Kosovo, Azerbaijan and Turkey!.

These Muslim countries have mainly Orthodox Christian Minorities!.

In Turkey,Southern Russia, Georgia and Armenia there is a FOURTH strand of Christianity,Ancient Assyrian Church Of The East, these are people of Ancient Mesopotamian origin who still speak Aramaic, and follow the oldest Christian Church in the world!.

EDIT - The comments by imacatholic are nonsense, Britain certainly was NOT Catholic from the 1st Century!. The earliest Christians were not Catholics, but members of Aramaic speaking communities in the middle east, see previous paragraph!.

The Catholic Church evolved only AFTER Christianity took hold within the Roman Empire, the council of Nicea in 325AD actually formulated Catholic Doctrine!. And Catholicism doesnt bear much resemblance to the Original and oldest Churches in the Near East, which still survive in Iraq & Iran(Ancient Assyrian Church) and Egypt(Coptic Church)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Hi there!.
Britain has been officially protestant since Elizabeth the First, but there is a divide across Europe in which the North and West of the continent (Scandinavia, Britain, Germany etc) is mostly Protestant (with the exception of catholic Ireland and Poland and Russian Orthodox Russia) and the South and East (Spain, France, Italy, Romania) is mostly Catholic (with the exception of Greek Orthodox Greece and Cyprus)!.
The Balkans remain a bit of a mish-mash of the three with a bit of Islam thrown in, due to the various conquerors that have been there!.
Cheers, Steve!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

well henry viiii the king of england made the church of england in about 1533 mainly because he wanted to divorce catherine of arogon and marry anne boleyn but the pope wouldnt let him so he decided to break away from the roman cathoilc church and make his own religion: the church of england, which allowed him to get a divorce but still has beliefs very similar to roman catholic, so i'd say yeah but quite a few european countries are protestant now!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Netherlands is more protestant than the UK!.The orange movement in northern ireland comes from the orange in hollands flag and william of orange (a malevolent, fanatical protestant nutter)Norway, previously was called Christiana in regonition of it's protestism!.
However,British protestism evolved vastly different from it's northern originaters!.The racism, ultra discipline and strict moral code, with neglible tolerance that Luther preached and caused problems with SA and the American southern states, was not acepted in the UK!.Here it began a process of greater understanding, freedoms and tolerance with more flexible lifestyles!.Our puritans, although narrow minded, were vastly less fanatical then the German/Dutch loonies!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

MARTIN LUTHER MADE UP PROTESTANTISM IN GERMANY WHILE YES IT DI SPREAD TO ENGLAND IT DID NOT LAST BECAUSE KING HENRY 8 WANTED TO GET DIVORCED FROM CATHERINE OF ARGON( THE PRINCESS OF SPAIN) BUT THE POPE WOULD NOT LET HIM SO THEN HE SWITCHED THE RELIGION OF ENGLAND TO ANGLICANISM - RULED UNDER THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND !.
