Crops could be grown near rives because they provided water for irrigation--and they provided drinking water as well, a necessity for life!. And, of course, one could fish in the rivers, and wildlife would gather there for water and could be hunted for food!. Rivers also provided some protection--a "barrier" enemies had to cross to get to the settlement!.Www@QuestionHome@Com 1!. Survival: fresh water from tributary streams and fish from the river!. 2!. Economic: When surplus goods are sold, the river is the most efficient form of transportation!. A city in the right spot can not only sell to their neighbors upstream and downstream, but control the flow of goods in either direction!. 3!. Military: A strong force at a point on the river can defend against invasion from either direction!. The river also provides a means of escape if the position becomes untenable!. 4!. Cultural: You gain not only goods, but also ideas from the neighbors in both directions!. 5!. But iI think the the most genuine reason is Water!. You know in ancient times it was difficult to get water from distant areas so most of the civilizations settled on rivers in order to exist!. They need water for agriculture ( I mean food), for their cattle and also for themselves to take bath, drinking and building houses!. another reason could be an easy access to other regions!. They knew that the easiest way to reach distant places is river !. You don't have to work hard in the sun to reach by land and the fresh water and food (fish) is always available for the journey!.
