Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Battles or wars!? Both conflicts involved many battles over a span of time!.

WWII involved the US being attacked directly and responding with in a defensive manner!. Our goal was the unconditional surrender of our enemies!. In many cases it was unrestricted warfare, bombing cities and civillians to accomplish military objectives!. We won the war and acheived our goals!.

Vietnam was about the domino theory and the idea that we should stop communism!. There were no true battlelines and we often restricted our engagements by not attacking civillain areas or violating the "neutrality" of other nations!. We did not acheive our goal and eventually withdrew from Vietnam after it became an unpopular war!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

WW2 started as a fight between European Nations in 1939 and the USA only got involved after it was attacked by Japan in December 1941!.
Vietnam was almost entirely an American affair based on the same ideology as that of Adolf Hitler , that is the domination and occupation of a weaker state for political ends!.
Most other countries declined to get involved!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Huge question!.!.!.

From the US perspective, WW2 was a war of self-defence against tyranny: Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor and Germany decleared war on the US soon after!. The self-evident objectives were to defeat the armies and governments of Germany and Japan and bring about their surrender!.

In Vietnam, the objective in US eyes was to deter North Vietnam from trying to overtake South Vietnam!. Because this is a rather more subjective and difficult to define objective, and because the Vietnamese saw the war as one to overthrow foreign interference to have one, strong, independent nation, the Vietnam war effort suffered from a lack of clarity and objectives!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

WW II was an all out battle!.
Viet Nam had a limited, (very ill defined), political
objective!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
